Allotments
There are allotment sites in Hemsworth at Grove Lane, Springfields (off Ringwood Way) and West End (incorporating Churchfields and Sandygate sites). There are also two sites in Fitzwilliam at Newstead and Wanneville (off First Avenue). The Town Council is currently in the process of upgrading the allotment service. Any resident wishing to have their name included on the allotment waiting list should contact the administration office giving their name, address, email, telephone number and site preference.
Bonfire
The annual bonfire and fireworks display is held at Hemsworth Water Park on 05 November each year. Entrance to this event is free and there is no charge made for the parking of vehicles. (Please note the Hemsworth Water Park car parks are closed for health and safety reasons on bonfire night and designated car parking is behind Hemsworth Park Care Centre and Kinsley Greyhound Stadium.)
Celebratory Presentations
The Town Council makes a presentation to residents living within the township who are celebrating an eightieth birthday, ninetieth birthday or any birthday over ninety, a Golden Wedding or a Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Anyone with details of a resident celebrating any of the above please contact the administration office or a Town Councillor.
Christmas Lights
Hemsworth Town Council along with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council provides a Christmas Lights Switch on event. This takes place on the last Thursday in November each year on Bank Street in Hemsworth. The lights are switched on at 6pm with schools and local churches providing carols throughout the day.
Christmas Presentations
The distribution of selection boxes to local schools and playgroups for children up to and including seven years old takes place every December.
Concerts
The Town Council holds two brass band concerts each year - one in April and one in October. A free bus service operates between Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam and Kinsley to bring residents to the concerts. In addition entrance is free of charge, refreshments are free of charge and there is also a free raffle during the evening.
Garden Scheme
The Town Council’s garden scheme is provided for residents of Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam and Kinsley who are aged sixty and above and are infirm. The scheme provides free assistance with the cutting of lawns and hedges twice per year between April and October (subject to resources). Application forms are available from the administration office from February each year.
Grants
The grant scheme is open to community organisations based in Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam and Kinsley, or those who can demonstrate how they serve Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam and Kinsley residents. Membership of the organisation must be open to Hemsworth township residents. Please contact Hemsworth Town Council for further details.
Public Question Time
Hemsworth Town Council allocates fifteen minutes at the start of each Town Council Meeting for residents to ask questions or raise issues of concern. Following this meeting the Town Clerk provides a question and answer leaflet which is posted to residents who asked questions and is also available with the administration office.
Summer Hanging Baskets
Each year the Council provides summer hanging baskets in Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam and Kinsley. In addition the Town Council maintains the flower bed at the side of 1 Bank Street in Hemsworth.
